I have been using my flickr account for to play Name That Film. Unfortunately Flickr management has asked that I remove all my film captures from my stream. I have done so and really have very little left of the Noh Thing account.
I am considering moving to Ipernity. Hopefully that will be a nice replacement.
I enjoyed this quirky and dumb little mystery. I thought with Bela Lugosi and a title taken from Edgar Allen Poe that it would surely be some sort of Horror movie. I have to conclude that the producers were intending to lure folks into seats with the appeal of a real Dracula-like horror.
Mind you the appeal for me in watching thirties and forties horror has nothing to do with the need to be scared. I don't find these movies scary in the least. I do love them for their mood, their earnest attempt at something otherworldly, and I think that they are usually a lot of fun.
I have been mulling over this movie and I don't really think it is a Horror movie but more of a Mystery. Yes some people die in this and I guess that is horrible. But at the beginning it seems like there can only be a supernatural force or ghost that is offing these people which is later revealed to be a person or persons with their own selfish agenda.
I don't know why a person with a selfish agenda makes it any less horrifying or horrible, Really nowadays (such an antiquated word) (as is antiquated) horror movies are very seldom supernatural. At any rate there is sort of a Scooby Doo ending where the killer(s) are revealed and everything and everybody is more or less OK in the end. That is if you make it to the end of the movie then you are home free.
I do love seeing Bela in any movie he is in. Even if he is the freaky (probably sexually perverted) groundskeeper. Really , If I was a groundskeeper I don't believe I would appreciate the bad rap my profession has continually received on film. They need a Groundskeepers Anti Defamation League. Bela is really not very important to this movie and I think they must have just thrown him in for name draw.
There is some weird quasi Egyptian cat worship just to piss off the Dog lovers in the crowd.Really the dog lovers need to find or invent an ancient civilization that worshiped dogs. I think then we could have movies about dogs that aren't Cujo or some sort of Cerberus, Hell Hound, or Black Eyed Dog.
Overall this one is interesting but not not my favorite.

I was allowed to see this movie in the theater with my counterpart and courtesan the very expressionless and stoic anti-noh.
This was a fun Summer movie the kind you usually see in the Summer, except in the Winter. Awesome.
It was not your typical horror movie but it did borrow ideas and imagery from may other movies and real life horrors. Not the least of which was the 9/11 suicide bombing of the World Trade Center. Other influences were Aliens, Blair Witch Project, Children of Men, Starship Troopers, and Godzilla.
I would like you to see it. However I don't want to tell you too much about it. Its clever and shocking and a lot of fun.
I expecting it to suck really bad. That is really the best way to see a movie. Not knowing jack about it and thinking it will be terrible. Then if its better than you think you will enjoy it and have a good time.
Haunting and beautiful movie. At first it seems boring and cold but do not let the description fool you. This is no starched movie where the guy croons because he got to hold some girls hand whilst she was wearing two pairs of gloves.
Yes there are nuns in it, but no its nothing like the nunsploitation movies. Luckily its no "School of the Holy Beast". I mean there is only room for one movie by that name in the world. No need to remake - its as bad as it can get.
I recommend heartily this movie. I don't to say much more other than watch it an tell me what you think.
Ciao,
"Were not auditioning for a Brigitte Bardot part here."
Thought this was going to be total trash given the title. I saw some captures of it in the Name that Film group making it seem very poorly put together.
In actuality it really does try hard for a film like this. Some of the effects are kinda silly but at least they are trying. I give this film an A for effort. and an B+ for grade B Horror fun.
All here are stock characters. The whole thing plays like a a Greek Tragedy, not in that resonates the Wisdom of the Ages but each character seem completely unable to generate any self awareness. They all charge headlong to their own personal doom. Like their own deadly sin which of course does them all (or nearly all) in by the end.
Its scholcky but worth a watch if you love your Horror movies devoid of color or subtlety like myself.
